What Makes Gwangju Universiade Stand Out

SEOUL, South Korea, June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Distinct differentiations of Universiade Gwangju are introduced under Eco & Economic, Peace & Development, IT & Communication, and Culture & Education categories.

The Universiade Athletes Village
The Universiade Athletes Village

Eco & Economic

The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) has reduced its budget for constructing facilities. Through the use of existing facilities, only 4 out of 69 venues are newly built, such as the Nambu University International Aquatics Center. It is the most high-tech and eco-friendly swimming venue in Korea and the facilities will be used for the World Aquatics Championships in 2019. Since the property was provided by Nambu University, the entire construction cost was noticeably reduced. The Aquatics Center will be operated and managed by the University after the games. Similarly, Kwangju Women’s University Universiade Gymnasium was designed to hold exhibitions and concerts after the Universiade. Along with the aquatics center and gymnastic center, the Jinwol International Tennis Court and Gwangju International Archery Center were cost-effective construction projects. 65 existing competition and training venues are located in Gwangju and other provinces.

An eco-friendly reconstruction of a 30 year-old apartment complex will be utilized as the Universiade Athletes Village. The Athletes Village construction project was funded by private capital investments and will be returned to the previous residents after the games, which will solve the problem of post utilization.

The GUOC saved 200 billion won by minimizing new venue construction and secured 100% of the marketing rights. Many corporations are sponsoring the World University Games in Gwangju by providing electronic goods, vehicles, food & beverages, apparel and more. Therefore, the Gwangju Universiade will be the most eco-friendly and cost-effective event in history.

Peace & Development

Gwangju Universiade looks forward to youth from around the world participating in this mega sporting event. Forums and conferences will be held for youth to network while achieving a common goal.

Gwangju is the first Universiade host city to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the UN to fulfill and share the value of peace by hosting the EPICS Forum and Youth Leaders Program.

The EPICS Forum was held in Gwangju for three consecutive years, from 2013-2015. During these events world famous professors and experts in the fields of “Eco,” “Peace,” “IT,” “Culture,” and “Sports” gave lectures and introduced their theses to 500 college and graduate students. These students were able to offer their thoughts, ask questions and discuss the topics with the speakers.

The Youth Leadership Program (YLP) was hosted by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and Gwangju. It was held to empower youth from developing backgrounds and conflict zones. The program helped give the tools and grow a community’s capacity to build on its strengths and respond to pressing community needs. 33 students from 19 countries, including four students from the Democratic of People’s Republic of Korea, participated in YLP in 2013.

The organizing committee was invited to a special event to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace at the UN headquarters in New York on April 15th. The GUOC had the opportunity to give a video presentation on the Universiade Gwangju 2015 and discuss international sporting agendas with international figures including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and IOC President Thomas Bach.

Gwangju has stepped up to provide relief to those in need following the devastating earthquake in Nepal, which claimed over 1,000 lives. The organizing committee organized a fund-raising event from May 21-29 to support the Nepalese athletes’ participation in the Universiade games.

IT & Communication

As Korea is a global IT powerhouse, Universiade Gwangju will be the most efficient and convenient event using Information Technology. In a first for an international sporting event, all venues and the Athletes Village will buzz with free WiFi. Various Social Networking Services (SNS) such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube, Kakao Talk, and Tic Toc will be used by the organizing committee staff to promote events and communicate efficiently.

Culture & Education

Anti-doping and cardiac screening projects have been established to raise personal health awareness. The GUOC, International University Sports Federation (FISU) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have published a free anti-doping textbook for university students on 5 continents to promote and educate athletes on anti-doping. Also, free cardiac screening will be provided throughout the games to prevent cardiac injuries.

The FISU Forum and FISU Conference are networking platforms to advance technical, social and cultural skills through sports. The FISU Forum was held for college and graduate students from March 17-22, 2014 in Gwangju. This forum was comprised of lectures by famous professors and speakers, group study and discussions. Students can feel free to deliver their thoughts and share opinions on how to enhance and develop university sports. FISU Conference Gwangju 2015 will be held from July 11-14, 2015 at Honam University. With the support and cooperation of the Korea Society for History of Physical Education, Sport, and Dance (KSHPESD), FISU Conference Gwangju 2015 will be a platform to not only stimulate research on university sport but also establish a global network within the academic and sports community.

Universiade is not just a sports festival, but also a cultural festival for youth to connect with the world and experience true sportsmanship. Young athletes can enjoy the cultural festivals in Gwangju together regardless of language, religion or ethnicity. The World Youth Festival will also be held from July 4-13 at the Asian Culture Complex Plaza and Geumnamro. The festival includes youth camp, music festivals and more for everyone to enjoy!

Ten Million Deaths? Australia Takes A Creative Lead on A Serious Health Issue

SYDNEY, June 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — An Australian short film competition has taken the creative lead on spreading the word about the global health issue of antibiotic resistance, with a clever film about antibiotic resistance and romance taking out first place at the awards ceremony in Sydney, Australia.

Entries in the #SaveTheScript competition came from around the world (including Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the United States) and were created by high school students, amateur and professional film makers, health professionals and people whose lives have been affected by antibiotic resistance.

Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, partnered with Australian not-for-profit health group NPS MedicineWise providing filmmakers with the brief to make a 45 second film on antibiotic resistance.

Taking out the top prize in the industry-first competition is “The Pick Up” — featuring a sultry scenario where a man walks into a bar and meets a very attractive lady called Gonorrhea.

“Antibiotics aren’t what they used to be,” the man at the bar is told seductively by his new friend Gonorrhea. “People use them so often these days the world has created new strains of superbugs that spread old favourites like tuberculosis, syphilis and yours truly.”

The film is the work of Melbourne-based OneWay Pictures. Producer Vincent Zimbardi says of their inspiration for the film, “As antibiotics continue to lose their power, such an important and serious message needed to get out there and reach people. Sometimes audiences deflect overly dramatic and serious communication. We know people embrace and engage in humour, so we wondered, what if gonorrhea was a person?”

To view the winning film, “The Pick Up”, please click here.

The judges were charmed by the animation featuring a young girl and her toy rabbit in Second Prize Winner “Fight Antibiotic Resistance”. Created by animation director Stevie Watkins, the film will make every parent stop and think about the issue of antibiotic resistance as the whimsical world of the young girl ends up in a serious, devastating health situation.

To view the second place winner, please click here.

Taking out Third Prize is a creative and striking animation featuring an army of zombies, volcanic explosions and fierce killer bees. The film “10 Million Deaths” animates the recent and dire prediction that 10 million people could die each year from antibiotic resistance by 2050 if we don’t all take action. The animation was the work of Seek and Hide Productions.

To view the third place winner, please click here.

Collaborating with a not-for-profit organisation on a health issue was a new step for Tropfest, and Managing Director Michael Laverty says he is “Absolutely thrilled by the incredible entries received and how filmmakers took this serious issue in so many creative, inspiring avenues to raise awareness. The campaign was industry-first and boundary pushing and we encourage people to watch and share these films.”

NPS MedicineWise CEO Dr. Lynn Weekes said that she is thrilled that so many filmmakers embraced the competition and its progressive approach to raising awareness about antibiotic resistance.

“Antibiotic resistance is a serious global health issue that is already affecting our communities. Short films have enormous potential to reach a global audience and encourage people to think about how they can join the fight against antibiotic resistance,” said Dr. Weekes.

The top 15 films, featuring superheroes, claymation superbugs, talking antibiotics, mothers that think they know best and a relationship breakup plus more, can be viewed on the NPS MedicineWise YouTube channel, please click here.

The Final competition was held on 24 June on PolyU campus, with six finalist teams competing in the University Division and another six teams in the Secondary School Division. These aspiring young people presented their innovative business ideas to a panel of judges comprising of renowned entrepreneurs, business executives, school principals, university professors and venture capitalists from Hong Kong and overseas.

After rounds of keen competition, the Gold Award of the University Division went to two teams – the team ClubQnect of The University of New South Wales, Australia and White Light Medical of John Hopkins University, United States. ClubQnect is a free to download “social ticketing” mobile platform that facilitates interactions between event goers, prospective event goers and event organisers. Not only does it allow a person to invite friends to different events, it gives users clear visibility when their friends purchase a ticket to any event. Users can purchase tickets on their phone and create groups of friends to attend events together for discounts and special offers. The mobile platform enables ticket re-selling and gifting, thereby minimizing ticket scalping.

White Light Medical is a medical device startup that develops a low-cost and smarter pedicle probe, AccuSpine, for accurate placement of pedicle screws in spinal fusion surgery. The self-contained device combining mechanical, electrical, and computational systems aims to reduce screw breach rates, operating room time, and radiation exposure, and therefore limit the cost of the procedure while enhancing safety for both patients and surgeons.

As for the Secondary School Division, Colyton Grammar School of the United Kingdom snatched the Gold Award (Team name: Salus). Their product – StopAid is a device to alert car drivers to keep a safe “stopping distance” with vehicles ahead in order to improve road safety. Infrared lasers are mounted in the front headlights to gauge the distance between the car and vehicles ahead. A red light warning will be shown on a dashboard monitor if the distance between cars is below a safe level. The red light will be off until a safer distance is reached. Although this feature is common in new cars, StopAid targets second-hand cars which lack advanced safety features.

GSC is an international business case competition launched by PolyU in 2009 as a major initiative to embrace internationalization, innovation and entrepreneurship. Run for the fourth time, this year’s GSC has attracted 130 teams from secondary schools and universities from 22 countries and territories (Secondary School Division: 65; University Division: 65). A total of 54 teams with more than 200 contestants were sponsored to Hong Kong for the Semi Final and Final from 20 June to 26 June.

PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong said, “Apart from providing students with a valuable opportunity to unleash their innovation and entrepreneurship potential, GSC helps develop their international mindset or global perspective, which is a sustainable competitive advantage in the global economy. Participants in this week meet up with peer groups from all over the world, thus opening their eyes and minds to different value, culture and systems.”

The judging panel of GSC 2015 was composed of a total of 30 Semi-Final and 10 Final judges with diverse experience coming from all over the world, all of them being renowned academics and senior executives in their respective fields. In addition, 8 overseas academics from globally renowned institutions were invited to play the role of international advisors as well as judges to provide top tips for students preparing for the Challenge and add international dimensions to the judging mechanism of the competition.

The business proposals were grouped by the sub-themes of Health and Wellness, Lifestyle, Environment and Sustainability, and Corporate Social Responsibility / Social Enterprise. Winners of Gold, Silver, Bronze, Commendation Awards as well as the Theme Award and Best of the Best Elevator Pitch Award for each division were selected and announced last night at the Gala Ceremony. All winning teams were presented with a trophy and cash prizes, and each individual team member received a certificate.

GSC participants were able to get a taste of life at PolyU. They resided at the Student Halls of Residence and visited PolyU’s eight Faculties and Schools, accompanied by PolyU Student Ambassadors. Company visits, as well as sharing sessions conducted by young entrepreneurs and PolyU students on business startups were also arranged. They also enjoyed cultural and heritage tours to local attractions.

The GSC was made possible due to the generous support from The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong for sponsoring this Challenge. The Challenge was also supported by The Mira Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair.

Millennials are Seeking Purpose and Innovation

STOCKHOLM, June 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

– and the World’s Most Attractive Employers are delivering just that

Business and engineering students in the world’s 12 largest economies have chosen their favorite employers. More than 240,000 respondents in Universum’s Talent Survey have ranked the companies they find most desirable for employment, and the results delivered some valuable insights.

(Logo: http://ift.tt/1dg0Y5F )

A lack of professional growth is their greatest fear

Millennials want to truly understand a company’s purpose, align with it and work with others to propel the organization’s performance. And they want to be inspired, not overwhelmed, by employer messages. Storytelling is critical: Millennials want to learn about employees who embody the organization’s values and communicate authentic stories about their working life.

Millennials’ greatest fear is to be stuck without the opportunity for professional growth and development. Professional services firms like PwC and EY continue to pull the highest rankings in this regard; other industries should benchmark how this sector nurtures employees through training and mentoring.

“The 2015 WMAE confirms that Millennials will go to work for companies whose stories they can tell, whose values they can espouse and whose businesses they can learn,” says Petter Nylander, CEO of Universum. “Students are seeking platforms for their own performance and growth. And they told us which companies are accomplishing this.”

Google takes the top spot for business and engineering students

There was little movement in the top five employers among business students from the 2014 rankings, with Google once again taking top spot, followed by PwC, EY, Goldman Sachs, and KPMG. The top-ranking companies among engineering students are Google, Microsoft, Apple, BMW Group, and General Electric.

Millennials are highly attracted to entrepreneurial energy in the workplace. They want to work in innovative settings, unencumbered by infrastructure, while still delivering strong financial results. Consequently, the tech industry generally attracts this kind of talent. Regarding employers in other industries, the energy sector took a hit with all employers losing ranks while the fast-moving consumer goods industry experienced a positive upswing.

The WMAE rankings are compiled from the Universum Talent Surveys, conducted in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and US. These markets represent 69 percent of the world’s economy. The field period for the data collection was from September 2014 to April 2015.
